Deep in the sugar beet fields in Nebraska's Panhandle, where young boys worked alongside their fathers after high school classes and baseball games, a war hero was in the making.
At the time Marty Ramirez was drafted to fight in the Vietnam War in 1967, he had no idea he would someday earn national honors for his efforts in the jungle.
He was the child of proud Mexican immigrants, a baseball player and a man in the throes of love who had a profound dedication to God.
