Press Release: National Purple Heart Honor Mission Earns a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator
(NEWBURGH, NY) – The National Purple Heart Honor Mission is proud to announce that its strong financial health and ongoing effectiveness and reliability have helped it earn a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator. This rating designates the National Purple Heart Honor Mission as an official “Give with Confidence” charity, indicating that our organization is using its donations effectively based on Charity Navigator’s comprehensive criteria that go beyond financials to reflect the work charities do.
Charity Navigator analyzes overall nonprofit health and performance based on four key areas: Leadership & Adaptability to help donors understand if a charity has clarity of purpose, Accountability & Finance to explain if they are transparent and fiscally capable, Culture & Community to show how they engage with their constituents, and Impact & Results to explain what they have accomplished.
“We are delighted to provide the National Purple Heart Honor Mission with third-party accreditation that validates their operational excellence,” said Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “The Four-Star Rating is the highest possible rating an organization can achieve. We are eager to see the good work that the Honor Mission can accomplish in the years ahead.”
“Our Four-Star Charity Navigator rating is further validation that our supporters can trust our commitment to good governance, but also that we’re using our donors’ gifts effectively,” said National Purple Heart Honor Mission Executive Director Colonel Russell O. Vernon (Ret). “We hope it will introduce our work to new supporters who can help us advance our mission to paying tribute to our Purple Heart heroes.”
Charity Navigator is the nation’s largest charity evaluator, providing donors with thorough and credible ratings of more than 230,000 organizations. Since 2001, the organization has been an unbiased and trusted source of information for more than 11 million donors annually.
The Honor Mission is preparing to welcome Purple Heart recipients from across the nation to New York’s Hudson Valley for its 2026 Purple Heart Patriot Project Mission, scheduled for April 27 – May 1, 2026. Each mission provides an all-expense paid trip to Purple Heart recipients to visit the museum dedicated as a tribute to their service, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, and other historic sites connected with the Purple Heart. The organization is developing the National Purple Heart Traveling Tribute and Education Center, which will tour the country bringing the stories of our heroes’ service and sacrifice to communities across the nation.
