KFDI: Star Spangled Salute - A Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient Is Honored

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Veteran U.S. Army Reserve Chief Warrant Officer 4 Robert Olzweski. Robert served in Vietnam and during Operation Enduring Freedom and is a Purple Heart recipient. In 1969 Robert was wounded when the tank he was riding in was hit by a mortar round. He spent 3 years in the Army and 35 years as a member of the Army Reserve.

PRESS RELEASE: Local Purple Heart Recipient David Hugus to be Honored with Trip to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, West Point

David Hugus entered the military in February 1966 and was first assigned to Germany. He joined the 101st Airborne in Vietnam on January 28, 1968, two days before the Tet Offensive started. During his first deployment to Vietnam, Hugus was stationed at a fire base in the vicinity of Phouc Binh. On March 4, while serving as a platoon leader, Hugus and his company came under attack.

PRESS RELEASE: Local Purple Heart Recipient Robert Olzweski to be Honored with Trip to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, West Point

Robert Olzweski entered the military in April 1967 and was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 64th Armored Infantry Division in Germany. In 1968, he was reassigned to the 5th Cavalry, 9th Infantry Division and deployed to Vietnam, spending a year in-country. While deployed to Vietnam, Olzweski held a variety of key roles, including serving as a Squad Leader for the final six months. On March 7, 1969, Olzweski’s unit started receiving incoming mortar rounds.

PRESS RELEASE: Purple Heart Patriot Project Honoree Truitt Breazeale Remembered for Lifetime of Service

SGM Breazeale served in the U.S. Army for 54 years - 32 years of active duty and 22 years teaching high-school Army JROTC. His service included tours at Forts Benning, Jackson, Riley, Bragg and Greely. He had three tours in Korea, two tours in Vietnam and a short time in Germany. Breazeale served as an Infantry Company Commander in Vietnam. He was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism.

PRESS RELEASE: Local Purple Heart Recipient Troy Green to be Honored with Trip to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, West Point

TSgt. Green enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in May 1989 and served for 27 years, 15 of those years on active duty. In April 2012, while deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, Green was stationed at FOB Finely-Shields when it came under attack from a vehicular-borne suicide bomb and small arms fire.

PRESS RELEASE: Local Purple Heart Recipient John Huelsenbeck to be Honored with Trip to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, West Point

A graduate of Avilla High School, Huelsenbeck was drafted into the U.S. Army in July 1966, assigned to Battery C, 1st Battalion, 44th Artillery Regiment and sent to Vietnam. In July 1967, 20-year-old Huelsenbeck's was operating a “Duster,” an armored open turret tank with twin-mounted 40-millimeter cannons, in support of U.S. Marine operations in the Vietnam. While operating near the Demilitarized Zone in South Vietnam, Huelsenbeck’s unit was ambushed by the North Vietnamese Army.

PRESS RELEASE: Local Purple Heart Recipient Harrison Manyoma to be Honored with Trip to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, West Point

Originally from Houston, Texas, Harrison Manyoma, the son of Franklin Manyoma (Father) and the-late Luz Edelman Manyoma-Bermudez, joined the U.S. Army in April 1999. In July 2004, while on a routine patrol in West Baghdad, the vehicle Sgt. Manyoma’s was traveling in was right next to a suicide car bomber as it exploded. As the smoke cleared, Harrison heard the enemy engaging with AK-47s. Manyoma sprang into action, providing first aid to his medic and then returning fire to hold off the enemy.

PRESS RELEASE: Local Purple Heart Recipient Jack Hanson to be Honored with Trip to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, West Point

Jack Hanson joined the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1965, during his senior year of high school. After graduating in 1966, he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served on active duty for six years. Deployed to Vietnam in November 1967, then-PFC Hanson was awarded the Purple Heart as a results of fragment wounds he suffered from exploding shrapnel and mortar shells during a clash on January 8, 1968, near Thau Thien, South Vietnam.

The National Purple Heart Honor Mission, one of America’s leading organizations dedicated to paying tribute to our nation’s more than 1.8 million Purple Heart heroes, has announced that Purple Heart recipient, retired Marine Staff Sgt. Johnny “Joey” Jones, will be awarded the 2021 Genesis Legacy Medal. Jones will receive the award during the national group’s Purple Heart Patriot Project scheduled for next April.
