U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Edward Evans (Ret.) of Silverhill is traveling this week to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and made a stop by the congressman’s office. CSM Evans is a Korean War veteran and has been chosen to represent Alabama’s Purple Heart Veterans as part of the 2021 Purple Heart Patriot Project. Evans will be receiving a tour of the newly renovated National Purple Heart Hall of Honor.

Later, in 2010 he served as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. It was during that deployment, while in Logar Province with the 1-91 Cavalry, 173rd Combat Airborne Brigade, when Livingston’s platoon came under enemy mortar fire. After clearing the area, while making his way back to other members of his platoon, another round of mortar fire struck close to Livingston, causing him to suffer shrapnel wounds that rendered him unconscious and resulted in his being medevaced out.

How also earned three Presidential Units Citations for his service in Vietnam as a member of the 5th Marines and the 1st Marine Division.
