Sioux City Journal: Sioux City Purple Heart recipient to be honored at national event

A Sioux City Army veteran who was twice wounded in Vietnam will represent Iowa at an upcoming national event paying tribute to Purple Heart recipients.

Retired Col. John Mansfield was chosen to attend the 2026 Purple Heart Patriot Project, a multi-day event in New York paying tribute to American veterans who were wounded in combat. The event, sponsored by the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, a nonprofit organization honoring Purple Heart recipients, includes a visit to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the nearby National Purple Heart Hall of Honor museum and other historic sites.
